If you thought for one second that our TY programme had eased up as we approach the end of the year, then you are in for a surprise! TYs are as busy as ever! As you may have seen on our Facebook page, our TYs are currently undertaking a Creative Engagement project to create a beautiful outdoor reading space adjacent to the school library. On Friday 23rd March we held our annual Spraoi Rith (Fun Run) with an Easter dress-up theme. The 5k run/walk was organized by TY students, the PE Department (Mr. Moore, Ms. Hennelly & Ms. Mahony) and the Sports Council. 1st years students were assigned to TY students and accompanied by 13 teachers and SNAs on the trek past the estuary towards Malahide Rugby Club and back to the school again. On Wednesday 21st Match, as part of Wellbeing Week, Fingal CC hosted a World Heritage Event in the school hall. This event, organized by Ms. Rooney on behalf of the Wellbeing Committee, saw students celebrate and promote their identity and culture within Fingal CC. Students were invited to apply for a 'stall in the hall' to promote their heritage. The students who took part displayed national flags, photographs, and phrases in their native languages, as well as objects from their country such as money (Swiss Francs), passports, dolls (Russia) and books (Germany). On Wednesday 21st, Wellbeing Week 2018 kicked off with students receiving colourful wristbands with the indicators of Wellbeing under the new Junior Cycle: Resilient, Connected, Respected, Active, Aware and Responsible. On the same day, students also took part in a World Heritage Event (see individual post) to reinforce the indicators of Connected and Respected, as well as celebrating the culturally rich student population in Fingal CC. On Friday February 9th Fingal CC took part in the Schools Go Orange day for Cycle Against Suicide. The Student council, along with Mr. McCabe, greeted students with orange facepaint, tshirts, flags, balloons and lollipops. Fingal CC is very proud to be a Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School three years running! The message from the Cycle Against Suicide campaign is "It's ok not to be ok, and it's absolutely ok to ask for help!".
On Wednesday 29th November, Fingal CC faced Ringsend College in our second debate of the League Phase of the Concern Debates competition. The motion before the house was "For women to access leadership positions, gender quotas must be implemented". Fingal CC was the opposing team for this motion. The students making up our team on the night were Rhys Mahony (Captain), Cristina Ibusca, Sandra Preissler and Eve Mongey. On Thursday 16th November three of our students Rhys Mahony (5th year), Patrick Ferris (5th Year) and Eve Mongey (TY) travelled to participate in the IT Carlow Open Day Debating Competition. This one day competition, in conjunction with their Open Day event, was sponsored by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland and promised a cash prize of 500euro for the winner and 250euro for the runner-up. The debate competition was organised by the IT Carlow Department of the Built Environment and as such, the motions for debate were construction-focused. Our Green Schools committee is a very active group within Fingal CC led by Ms. Arthurs and Ms. Memery. The students are currently working on earning the second flag which is the Energy Flag. As part of working towards achieving this second flag, Green Schools are promoting steps that can be taken to reduce energy consumption as well as raising awareness of climate change issues. Green Schools is a community-wide approach to stewardship of the planet, and as such there are lots of small steps students and parents can take to reduce energy consumption in the home. Take a look! Science Week Quiz 2017 Science Week 2017 has officially hit Fingal CC. You may have noticed some fantastic additions to our Science noticeboards with fascinating facts and amazing artwork related to our Solar System! On Friday 6th October Fingal Community College attended an award ceremony in Trinity College Dublin for the College for Every Student programme. For the second year running (2015/2016 & 2016/2017), Fingal CC was awarded the 21st Century 'School of Distinction'. The CFES programme aims to prepare students for progression to college through three pillars - Mentoring, Leadership through Service and Pathways to College and Career. Ms. Lynch, on behalf of Fingal CC, accepted the award from Minister Bruton. On Wednesday 27th September four of our students - Cristina (5th Year), Caitlin, Karolina and Vilte (all TY) -attended the Concern Debates workshop in the Carmelite Community Centre. The students, members of Fingal's Debate Club, attended the workshop to learn the art of debating, as well as the format for the upcoming Concern Debates in which the school is participating. The school's first debate is a Home debate against St. Mary's Secondary School (Glasnevin) on Thursday October 12th.
